How to Install Linux Applications (Ubuntu)

There are several different types of installation files for Ubuntu, and few of them are as easy to install as the EXE installation files found on Windows. If you need to download an application to your system that is not found in Add/Remove Applications, then you will find yourself with one of several different types of files: .deb, .rpm, .bin, .tar.gz, INSTALL, .sh, etc.
These different files all have a different method of execution. Below is instructions on installing these file types. This tutorial assumes you are running the latest version of Ubuntu, 8.10 Intrepid.

Installing DEB files

A .deb file is the easiest file to install on Ubuntu--if you are given an option for the type of file you want to download, choose this option.
Save the file to your Desktop. Once it is there, simply double click on the file and the system package installer will open. Click the button in the top right corner that says "Install Package", and wait for it to say finished. Close the window. Your application is now installed and ready to use.

Installing RPM files

DEB files are the default installation file for Ubuntu--if at all possible, you should choose a .deb file over any other file type. However, sometimes an application is only available in one or two formats, none of which are Ubuntu-flavored. RPM is one such file type. In order to install this file, you will need to convert it into something Ubuntu knows how to install--a .deb file!
To do this, open the Terminal and type: sudo apt-get install alien.
You will be prompted to enter your password. After entering, press the return key. You will see some code scroll by quickly, and then you will be presented with the option to continue or quit the installation. Type 'Y' and press the return key.
You will see the Alien application installing; this app will be used to convert your RPM file into a DEB file. Installation could take several minutes depending on your Internet and computer speeds.
Once finished, move the RPM file to your Desktop and open the Terminal. Type: cd Desktop. This will point your Terminal to your Desktop directory where you have the RPM file saved.
Now, to install the RPM file, in the Terminal, type: sudo alien -k filename.rpm
Replace filename.rpm with the actual name of the RPM file, then press the return key. It will convert the RPM file to a DEB file. Once finished, install the DEB file using the method above.

Install BIN files

A BIN file is similar to an RPM file, in that Ubuntu can't understand how to install it until you convert it into a different format. To do this, follow these instructions.

Download and save the BIN file to your systems Desktop. Once saved, open the Terminal and type: cd Desktop

Once you've cd'ed to the Desktop, type the following line into the Terminal: sudo chmod +x filename.bin

Change filename.bin to the name of your BIN file and press the return key. Nothing will show up in the Terminal, nothing will be copied to the Desktop--it will appear as if nothing at all happened. This is not the case, however, so do not worry. Type ./filename.bin and press the return key.
The program will install from within the Terminal.

Installing a Tar.Gz Archive

Many programs are still wrapped in a tar.gz archive folder. This is similar to a ZIP file, in that all the files are contained inside, but you can't simply extract an executable file. Installing an application from tar.gz is called install from source. To do that, follow the next instructions.

Download the tar.gz to your desktop, right click and choose extract here. A folder by the same name will be extracted to your desktop. Now, open the Terminal and type: cd desktop.

This will let your work within the Desktop directory. Now, within the same Terminal window, type: cd foldername

This will let you work from within the folder you extracted from the tar.gz. Inside this folder will be a file that says program-installer. To install this, type in the Terminal: sh program-installer
This will install the program from within the Terminal. Simply follow the directions as they appear.

How To Fix Webcam Problems

With broadband internet widely available, many PC users are actively using their webcams for video chatting and online meetings. Not only does the increased bandwidth facilitate the use of video over the internet, improved webcams and better video compression also help a lot.
But if your hardware is not working as it should be, a webcam is not much fun. So dealing with webcam problems can be a necessary evil. Webcam problems often simply mean there is no image to be seen, but in other cases you might actually get an error message or will not be able to select the webcam as the video source in your programs.

Steps to solve the webcam problems

The very first step is of course to check your webcam connection. Most webcams use the USB port to connect to the PC, so check if your USB cable is properly plugged. For build-in webcams this steps does of course not apply. Many new laptops have a build-in webcam. Also try connecting your webcam directly to your PC instead of through a USB hub (if you are using one).
The next thing is to do is to check your Windows Device Manager and see if the hardware is recognized and installed properly.
It might be that the hardware is recognized as a camera, but the right drivers are not installed. The yellow explanation mark will indicate a problem.
Other devices in Windows XP device manager
If the device is not recognized in Windows XP, it will be listed under Other Devices.
Windows Vista device error
In either case you can try to update the drivers. Right-click the device, and in the popup menu select Update Driver Software. Then follow the instructions on screen, but make sure you allow Windows to search the web for updated drivers.
In case no driver for the webcam can be found, you can try a third party driver finding program that scans your PC for installed hardware and allows you to install missing drivers.
If this fails, the next step would be to uninstall the software that came with your webcam. Use the Add or Remove Programs feature in the Control Panel. If that does not work you can use a third party uninstaller. After uninstalling the software, restart your PC and then reinstall the webcam software. In most cases this will solve the problems. Depending on the software, you might need to unplug your webcam during the software installation.
If the drivers and webcam software are correctly installed, and you still cannot see any video, there can be a problem with the program settings. Most chat and meeting software have a configuration option to select the video source for the webcam feature. If you have multiple devices that qualify for video, you might need to select your webcam device as the source for the webcam feature in that program.
Some webcams and programs require additional software, although that should be installed with the webcam if things are right. But is does not harm to check if your Java, Flash and Quicktime software are installed and up to date. But certainly check your DirectX software, since all video applications, including webcams, use DirectX for video processing. Try downloading the latest DirectX version and install it (Windows XP: DirectX 9.0c – Windows Vista: DirectX 10).
Lastly, if your webcam’s image is not sharp, check to see if it has a focus ring. A blurry image can sometimes simply mean the webcam is not in focus. Adjusting the focus through the ring can solve that problem.
Other picture quality problems with webcams can be addressed by changing the video capture properties for the webcam. Most programs that can use a webcam will have an option to access the properties of the video source, which will bring up the video capture properties window.
Webcam picture quality settings
Do keep in mind that not all settings will be enabled depending on the webcam and the webcam driver installed on your computer. In the example you can see that some settings are disabled. The example shows the video capture properties for an Acer Crystal Eye webcam.
If you are using your webcam for instant messaging with one of the popular chat programs, have a look at EatCam, which allows you to record your webcam chats from MSN, YM, ICQ, Skype, AIM and a few more!
